Series 1928 $1 Bills were the first series of small-sized $1 notes, beginning when the treasury shrunk currency from its larger size to the current dimensions in 1929.

There were two types of $1 bills issued in the series of 1928: Silver Certificates, with blue seals, and United States Notes, with red seals.

1928 $1 Bills, along with the later 1934 series, are commonly known as “funnybacks” due to their older reverse design, which simply features the word “ONE”. The modern $1 reverse design, featuring both sides of the Great Seal of the United States, was not introduced until 1935.

Silver Certificates, by far the more common of the two types, can be identified by their blue seal and serial numbers. These notes were once backed by silver and redeemable for silver dollars. Unfortunately, silver certificates have not been redeemable since 1968, but are still legal tender for their face value.

In all, about 1.5 Billion $1 Silver Certificates were produced with the date 1928, making the notes much rarer than the later 1935 and 1957 series, but slightly more common than the 1934 series.

However, when it comes to 1928 Silver Certificates, the specific series can make a huge difference in value. 1928, 1928-A, and 1928-B Silver Certificates were made in fairly large numbers and are relatively common compared to the 1928-C, 1928-D, and 1928-E series.

Circulated 1928, 1928-A, and 1928-B $1 Silver Certificates are worth between $20.00 and $50.00, depending on condition.

1928-C $1 Bills are worth between $70.00 and $300.00 in circulated condition.

Circulated 1928-D $1 Bills range from $25.00 to $150.00 in value.

Circulated 1928-E $1 Bills are the rarest, ranging from $200.00 to $1,000.00.

Notes that are uncirculated are worth considerably more, as are star notes, which can be identified by a star at the beginning of the serial number.

United States Notes, also known as Legal Tender Notes, can be identified by their red seal and serial numbers. Unlike silver certificates, these notes were not redeemable in silver. 1928 $1 United States Notes were issued in small numbers, primarily for circulation in Puerto Rico. They are much rarer and more valuable than the SIlver Certificates today.

Fewer than 2 million 1928 $1 United States Notes were made, making them rare. In circulated condition, a 1928 $1 United States Note is worth between $80.00 and $250.00. Notes in uncirculated condition, and notes with stars at the beginning of the serial number, are worth considerably more.
