How Much is a 1935 $1 Bill Worth?

Series 1935 $1 Bills were issued from 1935 through the early 1960’s. Unlike coins, the date on US paper money is not changed every year, it is only changed to signify major design changes. Minor design changes are marked by a letter, such as A, B or C, added after the date.

There were three types of $1 bills issued in the series of 1935: Silver Certificates, Hawaii Emergency Notes, and North Africa Emergency Notes.

The most common were regular Silver Certificates, which can be identified by their blue seal and serial numbers. These notes were once backed by silver and redeemable for silver dollars. Unfortunately, silver certificates have not been redeemable since 1968, but are still legal tender for their face value.

Some earlier 1935 $1 Silver Certificates, known as “Godless notes” or “Atheist notes”, did not feature the motto, “In God We Trust” above the word ONE on the back. This motto was added in the 1950’s.

About 29.8 Billion $1 Bills were produced with the date 1935, across 9 series: 1935, 1935-A, 1935-B, 1935-C, 1935-D, 1935-E, 1935-F, 1935-G, and 1935-H. This makes the notes fairly common. However, the number remaining in circulation today is much smaller.

Circulated 1935 $1 Silver Certificates are worth between $1.75 and $16.00, depending on series and condition. Notes that are uncirculated are worth considerably more, as are star notes, which can be identified by a star at the beginning of the serial number.

Hawaii Emergency Notes, dated 1935-A, were issued in Hawaii during WWII. They were marked with brown seals and serial numbers, as well as the word HAWAII overprinted across the back, so they could be easily identified if the Japanese captured supplies of US Currency.

Circulated 1935-A Hawaii $1 bills are worth between $20.00 and $100.00, depending on condition. Uncirculated examples are worth considerably more, as are star notes.

Similarly, emergency currency was issued in North Africa during the war. The North Africa notes can be identified by their combination of a yellow seal and blue serial numbers.

Circulated 1935-A North Africa $1 bills are worth between $40.00 and $120.00, depending on condition. Uncirculated examples are worth considerably more, as are star notes.
